Acne Treatments
Acne is a normal physiological response to the body's growth and maturation.
As our bodies mature, the increase in hormone production stimulate the sebaceous
(oil) glands to make more oil. This sebum causes the cells lining the outflow duct
of the gland to become sticky, leading to the formation of a plug. This plug prevents
the oil from getting out of the duct causing an acne lesion. Cystic infected acne lesions
will require systemic antibiotics or Accutane. By using the appropriate skin cleanser and
moisturizers, the plugs can be dissolved while increasing the healing of the skin's surface
and deep dermis. Antibiotics can kill the infection in lesions, decreasing severity of acne,
but the topical medications clear the acne. Accutane (isotretinoin) is often a cure for acne. A six month course
may completely and permanently stop acne and reverse acne scarring.
